5 Games Like State of Decay 2 for a Community Worth Saving
Good neighbours are hard to find. Especially after the apocalypse.

The hardest part of a State of Decay 2 supply run is sometimes choosing who gets the car keys. Your best survivor can handle trouble. Your best survivor is also the last person you want to lose.
These games like State of Decay 2 keep that connection between dangerous outings and people back home. Survivalist is the closest all-round match; the others lean into leadership, fragile groups, lasting shelter projects or a cheerfully unconventional workforce. What kind of community would you actually want to run?

The games
Survivalist: Invisible Strain
The group project survives the apocalypse. Naturally.
- Shelter building
- Squad builds
- Farming
- Co-op
- Platforms
- Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S; solo and up to four-player online co-op
- Price model
- Paid game; full release; Steam demo available
Survivalist: Invisible Strain turns recruits into people you have to live with. Affection, respect and fear can all bring someone into the fold, but they create different relationships. Residents remember your behaviour, and being useful doesn't automatically make you popular.
A farmer, cook or arrow crafter can fix a shortage, provided you can supply food, warmth and a bed. Is another recruit the solution, or another mouth your struggling settlement cannot feed? Build around the work you need done.
You can control characters directly in third person, then pull back to give overhead orders. The same community that supports an outing also faces shifting relationships and the threat of hidden infection.
The handcrafted Story mode gives that complexity some direction; the randomized Sandbox hands you fresh circumstances. Expect to spend time learning jobs and social dynamics. For players who want the people behind the resource totals, it's time well spent.

The verdict
The closest match for players who want a whole community to care about.
Dead State: Reanimated
You brought everyone home. Now comes the difficult conversation.
- Tactical combat
- Squad builds
- Shelter building
- Exploration
- Platforms
- Windows PC; single-player
- Price model
- Paid game; full release; Steam demo available
Dead State puts you in charge of a school shelter and promptly gives everyone a reason to need something. Outside, turn-based party combat rewards careful movement and complementary skills. Inside, surviving the day doesn't settle the arguments.
The Job Board makes party selection a staffing decision. Take a useful survivor scavenging and they cannot finish a shelter job. Leave them working at home and your field party loses their skills.
Individual mood also needs attention, separately from the shelter's overall morale. A luxury item can cheer up a particular ally; a request to avoid field duty asks how much their wishes matter. Supplies acquire names and faces.
Influential sub-leaders can challenge your judgment, so bad relationships can threaten your authority. Pick this for written conflict and thoughtful tactics. The management and dialogue slow the pace, but they make leadership feel like a responsibility you cannot simply shoot your way through.

The verdict
For the player who wants running the shelter to be the real adventure.
Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days
Keep the people. Be prepared to lose the address.
- Shelter building
- Crafting
- Exploration
- Squad builds
- Platforms
- Windows PC and macOS; single-player
- Price model
- Paid Early Access; version 1.0 and additional platforms announced for March 2027
Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days makes choosing a scavenger uncomfortable. Hunger, exhaustion, injuries and psychological needs follow survivors into a side-scrolling city where slipping past trouble can be smarter than fighting it.
Someone must stay behind to work and recover. Skill trees give survivors useful specialties, while scavenging decisions, shelter tasks and shared time can affect relationships. The best person for tonight's trip may be the person who most needs a night off.
Even a bulging food supply needs a plan: food can spoil unless preserved. Assign shelter work, check who's ready, and weigh another outing against the needs of the people already under your roof.
The crucial difference is home itself. Nightly attacks pressure the barricades, and your group moves between refuges while trying to escape the city. That makes a compelling, vulnerable community story, with less room for the forever-base fantasy.

The verdict
Pick it when the people are what you want to preserve.
Zombie Defence
The workshop needs supplies. Mara gives you another reason to return.
- Manual aim (desktop)
- Extraction
- Shelter building
- Crafting
- Permanent progress
- Platforms
- Single-player browser; desktop and touch controls
- Price model
- Pricing unannounced
On desktop, move, aim and manage ammunition and reloads yourself; touch controls assist with nearest-target fire. Scrap spent on ammunition cannot also fund that weapon component or shelter upgrade. Pick a project before heading out.
Home puts the results to work. Assign residents to fixed shelter stations, improve production, research upgrades and prepare crop-based meals for the next fight. The footprint is focused, so progress comes from developing the stations you have.
Mara adds the personal thread. Her authored conversations remember earlier replies, with room for friendship, romance or taking things slowly. It's a continuing connection to one character, alongside the practical satisfaction of a better-equipped shelter.
Even a failed Scrap expedition contributes its collected Scrap, up to storage capacity. Lasting projects soften a bad outing. Come for active combat and constructive homecomings.

The verdict
A satisfying homecoming loop for players who enjoy both better equipment and a familiar face.
Welcome to ParadiZe
Finally, a staffing problem you can solve with zombies.
- Shelter building
- Crafting
- Co-op
- Base defense
- Platforms
- Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; solo or up to four-player co-op
- Price model
- Paid game; cosmetic packs and Archeology Quest sold separately
Welcome to ParadiZe looks at a zombie and sees an employment opportunity. Hack the undead into Zombots and they can farm, fight and help defend your camp. The apocalypse has found a deeply questionable recruitment strategy.
Those helpers link the camp to your excursions. Gather crafting materials, give the Weapons Workshop something to work with, and improve the place you're coming back to. Upgrades, fortifications and traps compete with equipment for your attention.
Zombots can accompany you outside, too, and co-op brings up to three friends along. That makes ParadiZe an appealing switch when you want action, company and a growing camp without another evening of tense shelter diplomacy.
Its comic workforce carries less of the emotional weight of vulnerable human survivors. That's the trade: fewer reasons to agonize over a favourite specialist, more room to enjoy what your helpers can do. Treat it as the lively change of mood on this list.

The verdict
For a busy camp and useful companions without making survivor politics your second job.
